My thesis centers around ca 40 icons that were painted between ca 1925-1955 in Prague and Paris.Revival or survival?The question is whether or not the icon art of the emigres is an offspring of the prerevolutionary handicraft tradition.My hypothesis is yhat, on the whole, emigre icon art constitutes a revival; a revival entiled with the history of reception of the icon, with the fusion of a commitment to art and a commitment to religion which has been characteristic to emigre Russioan culture.The hypothesis is tested against information derived from 1) sources and literature pertaining to the prerevolutionary productions of icons (in a wide sense: comprising social history, history of mentality, ideas 2) primary sources from Prague and Paris; sources that throw light on the genesis of emigre icon art 3) the fourty emigre icons themselves.
